Dermal Fillers in Facial Aesthetic Procedures

A systemic review of the rarer but more severe complications

Injection site reactions such as bruising, swelling, tenderness, redness, warmth, and firmness, which occur immediately or within a few hours after the injection and are self-limited to 3-5 days, are specified in the product labelling and it’s frequent that patients experience them.

We focused our study on more severe and rare complications, which are usually related to delayed inflammatory, immune-mediated, and vascular occlusion events.

Forty-three studies were considered adequate and included in this systematic review. A total of 9632 patients received one or more facial filler injections out of a total of 9836 injections. A total of 701 patients developed 1166 complications. Regarding outcomes, 78.39% patients had complete resolution of symptoms, and 21.61% had sequelae such has blindness and visible scar.
